What Exactly is a “Digital Twin”?

By Jason Shepherd |

Here’s a two-minute video of me and Tamara McCleary, CEO of Thulium, talking digital twin at a Dell Technologies Analyst Event.  I hear a lot of people talking about a simple dashboard or a CAD model being a “digital twin”, but this is like those that claim a simple IFTTT rules engine is AI. What separates a digital twin from a simple UI is the inclusion of dynamic, real-time data of the state of an asset in the physical world. By comparing this dynamic context to the as-designed capabilities users can learn a lot and make adjustments on the fly. This can be something discrete like a jet engine, an entire factory or a city. When I talk digital twin I also outline how the concept will be impossible to scale without open interoperability because rarely is any given system-of-systems – much less a simple product like a toaster – comprised of parts from one supplier. Good quick watch, always a pleasure to chat with Tamara! – Jason Shepherd, IoT and Edge Computing CTO, Dell Technologies @defshepherd
